Short description

We want to create the first online virtual Fandango.

A fandango is a mexican musical tradition, where all the participants collaborate to create the music. “Elotrolado.net” is a participative concert that seeks to make analogy to this tradition but in a virtual space. The public can interact from any mobile device through a web application. It is a virtual space in 360º, where there are 3D models that, when pressed, generate sounds thru the audio system in the room. These sounds are orchestrated by three Mexican sound artists located in Spain, Germany and Mexico. Through this participatory art project, we seek to rethink migration as a physical distancing but not as an act of disconnection; to generate a virtual micro-Mexico where a fandango is executed for expatriates: interconnecting individuals through the abstraction of a tradition taken to an online space.

Extended description

In Veracruz, Mexico, Son Jarocho is a musical tradition based in a party called fandango. During the event all the participants collaborate to create the music: there are instruments in many sizes, including very small ones for kids, other sing verses, recite ‘décimas’ or make rhythms with the zapateado or the donkey's jaw. String instruments make different timbres depending on their size and their different functions: there are harmonic and melodic sounds. Music is created as a whole, it is a ritual of social cohesion and is at the same time one of the strongest identity symbols of the country.

elotrolado.net is a participative concert that seeks to make analogy to the fandango in a virtual space. The public can interact from any mobile device through a web application. It is a virtual space in 360º, where there are 3D models that, when pressed, generate sounds thru the audio system in the room. These sounds are orchestrated by three mexican sound artists located in Spain, Germany and Mexico. The music is based on samples of traditional music and field recordings in Mexico. Attendees can generate harmonic sounds to each composition and their participation can be seen as an explosion of particles that are displayed in the web application and at the same time in a video projection in the room.

Through this participatory art project, we seek to rethink migration as a physical distancing but not as an act of disconnection; to generate a virtual micro-Mexico where a fandango is executed for expatriates: interconnecting individuals through the abstraction of a tradition taken to an online space.
