Short description

In light of the increasing smartness/aliveness of things, the proliferation of these in our lives, and their appetite for our attention, how can we redesign the end of life of smart objects to allow a real closure of the relationship built with them?

Beyond futuristic narratives, we propose to tap into the rich anthropological history of funerary rites and animism to collectively reflect on how to replace, bury or kill a smart object! Discussion would also span from what it means to design endings to how it could help lighten our crowded mental landscapes.

Extended description

The problematic materialism and pervasive consumerism has led to the current ecological threat above us, but nowadays it is even our personal and mental ecologies that are endangered of being colonized by new smart guests, and there is no sign that we will not soon crawl under the mental weight of these relationships, even after separation!

In the context of the circular and sharing economy, and beyond futuristic narratives, we propose to tap into the rich anthropological history of funerary rites and animism to collectively reflect on how to replace, bury or kill a smart object!

Discussion would also span from what it means to design endings to how it could help lighten our crowded mental landscapes. Let's allow more death to escape the accumulative logics in our lives!
